After a long time of continuous rumours and speculation, Danny Ainge and the Boston Celtics have finally found a trade for star PG Rajon Rondo. The trade was agreed upon Thursday night, with the Celtics agreeing to send Rajon Rondo and Dwight Powell (a 45th pick rookie) to Dallas, in return for C/PF Brandan Wright, SF Jae Crowder and PG Jameer Nelson, as well as Dallas' first and second round pick in the 2015 NBA draft.
Rondo has been playing well for the Celtics in all categories apart from his shooting percentages where he is currently at a career low in field goal percentage, with 39.9% from the floor, as well as a mere 33% from the free throw line. He is shining in other aspects though, dishing out 10.8 assists per game and grabbing 7.5 boards a game.
Rondo gives Dallas a huge boost on defense, especially on the perimeter, whether or not he will fit in on offense will be interesting to see. It's painfully obvious that Rondo has no confidence in his shot, and Dallas have played a certain offense that lets their PG have open looks from Tyson Chandler screens. Rondo can hit the mid range jumper, but not at a consistent rate, his three point shot isn't there and never has been. Luckily for the Mavs they have players such as Ellis and Parsons who excel from beyond the perimeter and can hit it consistently.
Boston basically gave up Rondo for nothing, with veteran Jameer Nelson giving them some nice experience and a solid PG to help with Marcus Smart's development. Jae Crowder joins a crowded wing bench, whether Crowder is in Boston's future plans is unknown, but he is a solid player that can be depended on when needed. Brandan Wright seems like the perfect fit for the Celtics, but I don't think thats how Boston perceive the situation. With established Centers Tyler Zeller and Kelly Olynyk, it doesn't seem like Wright will fit into the rotation. Whether or not Boston attempt to flip Wright to another team in hopes for an expiring contract will be known soon enough.
Rajon Rondo will become a free agent this offseason, and it will be within Dallas' best interests that they do everything they can to resign Rondo.
